Thirty years after Riverdance conquered the stage of the Point Theatre in Dublin for seven minutes on 30 April 1994 during the Eurovision Song Contest — instantly becoming a global phenomenon — the legendary Irish dance sensation returns with an anniversary production: Riverdance 30 — The New Generation. With a completely reinvented show performed by a young, exceptionally talented cast, Riverdance celebrates its 30th anniversary with a large-scale world tour that will also stop in our country in March 2027.
This far-reaching cultural phenomenon combines the power and precision of traditional Irish dance with contemporary influences, supported by Grammy Award-winning music — more than 3 million Grammy Award-winning albums sold and over 10 million DVDs — virtuoso musicians and a breathtaking stage design.
"5 out of 5 stars. …continues to impress in the same way it did three decades ago. The talent of its stars is off the charts… they were electrifying." — GLASGOW TIMES (Scotland, October 2025)
30 years of Riverdance, now with a new generation
Riverdance celebrates its thirtieth anniversary with an impressive world tour under the title Riverdance 30 — The New Generation. The anniversary show remains true to the iconic Irish dance style, yet feels strikingly fresh and contemporary. The choreographies have been renewed, the costumes redesigned, and the production features spectacular projections, lighting design and motion graphics. Across the large video screen behind the dancers, breathtaking images glide by: flowing rivers, mysterious forests, impressive cityscapes and mountain landscapes that amplify the power and emotion of the performance.
But what is most remarkable is the cast. These are dancers who did not consciously experience the original Riverdance, but who grew up with it. With an irresistible drive and energy, they breathe new life into the show. In the world of Irish dance, performing in Riverdance remains the ultimate dream; many young dancers know every step before they even walk into the audition room. The 30th Anniversary Tour celebrates this new generation of performers, without taking anything away from the soul of the original.
Critics the world over have showered the anniversary show with superlatives, praising the reinvented choreography, the energy of the cast and the impact on audiences. From Dublin to New York, and from Sydney to Beijing, reviews confirm Riverdance as 'the number 1 dance spectacular in the world' and 'a once-in-a-lifetime experience'.
A show that conquered the world
What began as an interval act swelled into a surging river of success. Riverdance has since been seen live by more than 31 million people in 51 countries, performed more than 16,000 shows in 606 cities, and reached a global television audience of more than 3.5 billion viewers.
The current world tour confirms that the appetite for Riverdance remains as strong as ever: a sold-out tour across the entire United Kingdom and a special run at Radio City Music Hall in New York.
The power of the show lies in its unique ability to transcend boundaries. Founder and director John McColgan, who created Riverdance together with producer Moya Doherty and composer Bill Whelan, puts it simply: "There's no language barrier." That universal appeal — the combination of sweeping music, a firework of feet and irresistible energy — cannot be explained. It has to be experienced.
Thirty years — and never taken for granted
The fact that Riverdance still draws full houses worldwide in 2027 surprises even its creator. "You would have been foolish to say 30 years," McColgan admits. "There are very few shows in the world that have toured for that long. We're very lucky." Although in the early years he was very hands-on at every step, McColgan can now rely on an experienced creative team that shares responsibility for planning, logistics and artistic execution. This allows Riverdance to keep evolving 30 years after its premiere, always with respect for the original structure and emotional drive of the show. The classic Irish dance style remains the beating heart, but the experience feels fresher and bolder than ever. "We do whatever we can to freshen it without taking away from the original substance," says McColgan.
Luck alone is truly not sufficient as an explanation. In June 2025, a special Alumni Night took place at the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin, bringing together more than 700 former dancers — living proof of the close-knit community that Riverdancehas built over three decades. In total, 1,500 performers from 29 countries have taken part. Within that community, 74 marriages have since taken place and 136 children have been born, quite a few of whom are now performing on stage themselves.
With Riverdance 30 — The New Generation, Belgian audiences will have the chance in March 2027 to experience that unique combination of virtuosity, tradition and modern spectacle value live. The show is both a tribute to the original and a powerful reinvention of it, carried by a new generation of dancers who prove that Riverdance has lost none of its magic and is ready for the next thirty years. Don't miss it!
